  INTRODUCTION:

My idea for my short film is a silent thriller about a girl getting kidnapped on her way back from school and never being seen again.

SHORT FILM ANAYLSIS:

Narrative

A man is about to kill himself until he sees a young girl getting kidnapped, he then decides to save her by following the van and killing the two people involved in her kidnapping. The short film follows a linear narrative structure and focuses on a man (Jet) who clearly has a weak mental state trying to save a girl regardless of him trying to kill himself at the beginning of the narrative.

Character

The main character in this film is a man who is clearly mentally unstable and unfortunately struggling immensely in life which is shown due to his near suicide attempt right at the beginning of the narrative. However, the man is proven to be a noble and brave person as even though he was at the lowest point in his life he still went out of his way to save a young girl who has been kidnapped. Although this could be argued that him saving the young girl was extremely dangerous and a “suicide mission and due to his earlier mental state, him embarking on this journey could been seen as an effortless way out it proves that he still holds life at some value as he went out of his way to save this young girl life regardless of the disregard he had earlier towards his own life.

Mise en scene

The main colors used in this film are dark grey and blue colors this could symbolize the serious and tense atmosphere of the film. The dark colours could also be used to highlight the sad and depressing atmosphere that is conveyed in the narrative due to the dark, tense themes displayed in the film.

Throughout the film low key lighting is constantly displayed in the narrative to reinforce the uneasy atmosphere.

Actors are used in the film to create meaning through their use of facial expressions due to the movie being a silent thriller. The actor's facial expressions are the only indication audience members get on finding out the character's thoughts and feelings

Action is also used to create meaning as we see the man shooting two men with a gun when he breaks into the house to save the young girl.

The makeup and costumes used in jet are regular casual clothes and no makeup is used.

Props such as a gun are used in the short film jet. This gun is used to tell a big part of the narrative as it is the same weapon the man was initially using to try and kill himself in the beginning but then ended up being used as the murder weapon to save a young girl.

The setting used was the man’s car where the man (jet) was initially going to end his life however ended up being the car he drove to save the girl. The house where the girl was situated was also used to create meaning as it is where the action happened.

Sound

The film is a silent movie meaning the film contains no character dialogue, this builds tension in the film as there is no clear sign of what is going to happenHowever, music is used in the narrative to build a tense atmosphere within the film. Background noises can also be heard such as heavy breathing, but all these sound techniques are just used to highlight and create a tense and terrifying atmosphere.

Cinematography

Due to the lack of dialogue in the film, close-up angles are essential in the film to ensure all the characters' facial expressions and actions are seen properly so the narrative is understandable.

Editing

Cuts and transitions are a big part of the narrative and are used a lot in the film to show the change in location. The transition between the man in the car then outside, then in the house emphasizes the progression in the storyline.

PRIMARY RESEARCH:

`

QUESTION 1:

Question one helped me gauge a sense of what age my audience is and what my target audience should be based on this. Since most of my watching audience is 14-16 years old my film will be catered to around that age bracket.

QUESTION 2:

Question two allowed me to see what gender will predominately be watching my film. From this I can recognize ways in which I can relate to both genders based on my audience.

QUESTION 3:

Finding out about people's favorite genres in film has helped me get a good indication of what type of genre I should make my film as I have a clear indication of what genre my target audience likes to watch.

QUESTION 4 & 5:

Finding out about people's favorite films and why is important and has helped me when beginning to write my own film. This is because I have been able to find out what other people like and why they like it which has provided me with inspiration when beginning to write my own film.

QUESTION 6:

I found out that most people do not enjoy silent movies which is beneficial for me to know as the idea for my movie will now slightly have to change to suit other people's preferences.

QUESTION 7:

Question 7 was helpful because I found out most people like thrillers, which means that when making my film, I know that filming a thriller is an innovative idea.

QUESTION 8:

My short film is going to be 5-10 mins because based on the responses I received I know not to make my film too long.

QUESTION 9:

Based on the answer to this question I found out that most people wanted a female protagonist which is what I will use in my film.

QUESTION 10:

Most people like movies about kidnapping so I will be writing a film script about kidnapping and filming it as I know that is what my audience enjoy.

SECONDARY RESEARCH:

When making a silent movie it is important to get an actor that can show effective actions and body language because there is no dialogue, so it is important the storyline is still shown clearly. Background music and a clear and concise narrative are particularly important in a silent movie so you can understand the whole movie without dialogue

When writing a thriller, you need to make sure the main character is compelling and has an interesting backstory, so the audience is engaged with what is happening in the narrative

It is important to make sure the narrative has depth and is easy to follow. It should make the audience feel scared but not bodily terror like a horror movie more phycological terror and it should mess with the audience's mind.

When writing a thriller, it is important to have a detailed storyline as thrillers are considered scary because they are normally real-life situations that anyone can go through.
